Just go "between"
In the science fiction/fantasy novels about the Dragonriders of Pern by
Anne McCaffrey, dragons were able to essentially teleport. They could disappear from one spot and instantaneously reappear in another, carrying along the people riding them. McCaffrey's characters referred to this as "going between." I guess "going between" is a skill we cyclists are expected to learn? This article https://patch.com/new-york/east-vill...-hurleys-death complains about the "mixing zones" where cyclists on a roadside bike lane or path have to deal with (gasp!) cars and trucks that need to make turns. Those vehicles actually cross the bike lane! So we need a way for either the bikes or the motor vehicles to suddenly pop into some other space dimension, avoiding the mixing zone, and pop back into existence on the other side of the intersection. Sure, it would be messy if you re-appeared exactly where someone or something already exists; but once we have basic teleportation figured out, that conflict should be easy to solve. More realistically: in Stockholm or Helsinki (I forget which) we rode in bike facilities that had the solution: Separate traffic light phases for bikes and motor vehicles. Those Europeans were willing to put up with the delay in traffic flow caused by individual green lights. But I think that would be a very tough sell in America. -- - Frank Krygowski |
