No. *Where do you see ironic aspects?

You could say that it is ironic that he had a stroke after maintaining
his fitness in to his '70s -- kind of like an avid non-smoker getting
lung cancer. OTOH, stroke is a known risk of hip replacement surgery,
probably due to marrow embolism or hypotension during surgery or
anesthesia -- I don't think it has been nailed down yet. Doctors
typically dose hip replacement patients with anticoagulants to prevent
clotting and stroke and DVT. Therapy may be different for patients
with bad fractures and other trauma. Anticoagulation can also cause
brain bleeds in older patients -- another type of stroke. It sucks to
grow old.

Another older rider that I used to race with had a stroke while riding
his bike. http://bikeportland.org/2012/11/21/t...ing-ride-80453

It looks like he's recovering, though. I rode with him shortly before
his stroke, and he kicked my ass up the West Hills. Actually, we met
up by accident, rode at a talking pace which was his way of saving
energy so he could sprint away at the top. Old dudes have to be more
strategic. He still had more energy than me, strategy or not. He
kicked my ass 25 years ago, too.

I always wear my helmet, but I understand the notion put forth by many that a cracked helmet is no proof of anything much.

In the case of Jobst’s crash, and in the absence of eyewitnesses, we have to keep in mind that a stroke may have caused the crash and not the other way around.

Even with a team of expert observers with MD degrees observing the crash, that question might still be unanswerable. (Cycling crashes usually happen too fast for analysis without slow motion video.)

A parallel, for example, is the common assumption that an elderly person one might know happened to fall and break his hip, while getting out of bed, when what actually happened is that, on getting out of bed, his broke his hip and then he fell.

“Expert” testimony abounds,

Bob

Living long enough for the sun damage to matter is a new phenomenon.

The above message is a Usenet post.
I don't recall having given anyone permission to use it on a Web site.

avoid over training ....eat fish.

Jobst was hot dogging, did not see a pothole due to ageing, did not correct due to aging, fell onto the road, an aging fall and impact..

and unfortunatly, aged in one short burst into a career ending injury almost.

My, you certainly are an exceptional person.

In 1987 I was using a dail-up modem to send overseas
telegrams because it was cheaper than a fax to Japan.

I read Usenet in 1987, but I don't see that
as anything exceptional but only that I'm a
sufficiently-old software engineer.
Most people reading Usenet at the time got
their news feed through school or work.

Suffering head injury after eschewing protective headgear.

That happens to thousands of pedestrians and tens of thousands of
motorists every year. Far more than to bicyclists.
