F1 bicycle racing--anyone have a pic?
Sometime during the 1990's (I thinks) there was a short-lived racing
series. It was using 20" wheel bikes on pavement, they had geometry that was very aero-crouched. The frames were NOT bmx, they were about the same size but specially designed for this, and a couple companies actually sold the bikes for a couple years. The frames were thin aero-style tubing and they would only accmodate narrow tires in the frame and forks--regular 20" knobbies wouldn't fit. The rear wheel had several cogs and a derailleur, on a handlebar shifter; I only remember one chainring. Haro was the one I test-rode (I think it was Haro anyway). The handlebars on this bike were flat, and it had a front-fairing of plastic like a motorcycle fairing. The color scheme was mostly-white, with some striping. The bike sat in a shop in IL for a couple years; print magazines I saw said that orgainzed races wer held in California for a couple years. ......I Googled a bit but cannot come up with any mentions of this series. Specifically I wanted a photo of one of these bikes for my own digital archives. Any time I search for "formula 1" or "f1" I get results on the car series, or on the current bicycle models named "formula 1". Are any pictures of these bikes onilne anymore? |

F1 bicycle racing--anyone have a pic?

Well okay. The years was 1987-1989, not in the 1990's at all. .....And the only "actual" Google result I can get is that there is a paragraph mentioning F-1 racing on the Wikipedia entry for Tinker Juarez, under "Miscellaneous": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tinker_Juarez There's no Wikipedia entry for F-1 bicycle racing at all. There's no other relevant Google results for variations of "formula one bicycle", "F-1 bicycle" or "F1 bicycle". |
