Yes. After Andrei Kivilev's untimely death, helmets are now mandatory in all
major Tours, except on the final climb of a mountain stage longer than a certain
length.

Which is a ridiculous exception. There's no reason at all to even rewuire foam
hats save to make spectators feel better. They certainly don't make the riders
any safer.

Well, they obviously think they do, and I agree.

Interesting that they're allowed to unfasten the chin straps while
climbing, like that makes one degree of difference.
Sponsors need to check their billboard allocation. Little
helmet-strip-width logos all over the 'lids!

Why do you think the camera bikes try to get so close?

That's the thing about foam hats. You only have to believe they work,

because
all the really get tested to "protect" you from is about a six-foot fall

from a
standstill.

There are a number of different scenarios where they will protect you.
Don't get me wrong - not enough to make me wear one when going a mile to the
shops or climbing a ladder, but still - Some cases where they will help.

The rest is a mix of fashion and paranoia.

However mush is fashion [1] or paranoia, that does not mean that there is NO
BENEFIT as you have just stated.

[1] Cycling fashion? My bike is too cheap to impress roadies, they will not
be impressed by my helmet. My most bike-y of friends is the one that knows
to keep his tyres above 10 psi.

Andrei Kivilev is dead. Tyler Hamilton is running in 5th place in the Tour de
France.

End of story.

And you think it's becuase one wore a foam hat and the other didn't? Maybe

Tyler
shoudl start wearing football shoulder pads, too. In fact, since breaking

a
collar bone is the "cyclist injury," maybe we should all be wearing

shoulder
pads.

?? proving you don't know what you are talking about.
Collar bones break when you put your arm out to break your fall. Shoulder
pads do not help.
