Hey guys,

While doing web search for bicycle volunteer opportunities, I quickly
typed the phrase "Bicycle Volunteers". I had the happy accident, and
misspelled it "VELONTEERS"!

This gives me an idea to start my own bike volunteer group, and call
it "VELOnteers"!

I'm definitely onto something with this!

Velonteers could do things like escort young kids to and from school.
Get groceries or prescriptions for housebound, disabled, or elderly,
people. Search for lost pets.

What other kinds of things could VELOnteers do?

You want to start a bike volunteer group /because/ you thought of a cool
name for one? (-:

I shudder to think of the liability issues! I don't know where you are,
but be warned that some US states have a rather broad idea of who needs
licensing to routinely, even briefly and for no money, take care of
others' kids.

Good luck finding something useful and practical, though!

The "cool name" just *inspired* a good idea that I'd like to explore
more.

Sponsor group rides in which every newbie is escorted by an
experienced rider or two.

I've heard of groups who collect discarded bikes and use the parts to
build transport bikes for people who are hard up.

Teaching some basic bike maintenance might be helpful for new riders
too.

Particularly brake adjustment.
