I am somewhat curious as to the sudden popularity of e-bikes. While cheaper they are a great deal less practical than motor scooters.

The French definitely are entitled to a sense of style. They just have to discover it. Those bikes look like their useless decorative features were designed under the distant, much-diluted influence of De Stijl by a not very talented graphic (not industrial) designer.

I cringe with embarrassment every time I hear a "designer" talk of "cutting edge design".

Probably has something to do with legal status. No license, no registration,
no insurance. Motor scooters impose all three, at least in California.

E-bikes don't inflict pollution, noise, or significant risk of major injury upon other people in their vicinity. They are thermodynamically several times more efficient than stinking gas scooters. When they are based on traditional bicycle designs, they have the virtues of traditional bicycles-- which make them much easier and safer to operate than small-wheeled or stand-up scooters.

I'd bet that e-bikes are proven to be more dangerous than conventional
bikes, but safer than e-scooters. And both are certainly safer for
pedestrians than are cars, pickups, other trucks and SUVs.

Tell that to the people who've been hit or nearly hit by E-bikers whilst the person was walking or riding on a MUP or rail-trail. I seen a large number of very near misses ans also have seen people crash because of a fast riding E-biker not giving enough room when passing.

Cheers

Plus noisy and smelly and boost the number of organs for transplants.
