Default In the News: Too much testosterone kills brain cells

From the article:

By Maggie Fox, Health and Science Correspondent

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Too much testosterone can kill brain cells,
researchers said on Tuesday in a finding that may help explain why steroid
abuse can cause behavior changes like aggressiveness and suicidal
tendencies.

Tests on brain cells in lab dishes showed that while a little of the male
hormone is good, too much of it causes cells to self-destruct in a process
similar to that seen in brain illnesses such as Alzheimer's.

"Too little testosterone is bad, too much is bad but the right amount is
perfect," said Barbara Ehrlich of Yale University in Connecticut, who led
the study.

Testosterone is key to the development, differentiation and growth of cells
and is produced by both men and women, although men produce about 20 times
more of the hormone.

It can also be abused, and recent scandals have involved athletes who use
the hormone, or steroids that turn into testosterone in the body, for an
unfair advantage.

Though females do have some testosterone, that has to peg the unintentional
humor and irony meter.

Perhaps someone has knowledge of this: is it possible to naturally
produce amounts of testosterone that are unhealthy? Is there some
specific illness associated with this?

Though there are few eunuchs with balding problems (so says Wiki), there is
no direct link between excess T and baldness.

Though they call it androgenic alopecia it's thought that the reason has to
do with the skin on the scalp not the actual DHT levels. The cells, or hair
follicles might be too sensitive to higher, but normal levels of DHT.

On the size of the organ, I don't know that is true either. Probably plenty
of size among those with T in the lower end of the range. Lots of high T
guys with small endowments, don'tcha know. They're the ones that are
balding driving sports cars who yell at you to get moving when the light
turns green.

Teasing some, but it's true...

I looked up hirsuitism thinking I'd find something, but according to
current research, that's thought to be due to high levels of circulating
insulin! (fat chicks=hairy upper lips)
