Default How do blood values go up ?

Very interesting stuff here
http://nyvelocity.com/content/interv...-critic-speaks
the questions that weren't asked though are :

1. How do blood values go up ?
2. Is it possible for blood values to go up when a racer rests" ?

Not sure about #1, living in altitude I suppose, but for #2, common
sense says it could, and both for Wiggins and Armstrong they did.

If that was a sure sign of doping they would likely have been more
cautious...or mayb they don't give a toss because they are below the
legal levels so they think no one will pay attention, odd..

In blood values everything is a 'range'. Reticulocyte count varies in
a normal individual as 0.5% to 1.5%. Notice that's not an absolute
count, but a percentage, so it is by the very nature imprecise.

In addition, counts done on different machines will give a different
value (but within a small range). Counts done on an individual will
vary throughout the day.

Thus to truly say that a blood value goes 'up' is not going to be very
meaningful. It can go up or down depending on the time of day, if the
individual was reclining or standing or just finishing a workout. When
we were qualifying donors, those with a hematocrit slightly too low to
give plasma or platelet concentrates were asked to run up and down a
couple flights of stairs. Upon returning their hematocrit was elevated
and we could accept them.

If someone is over or under hydrated, their blood values will also
change. Taking nutrients such as iron supplementation could cause an
improvement in hemoglobin concentration, which is measured in grams
per deciliters, a reasonably precise measurement but not an absolute
value.

Plus doping will also cause the values to change.

Wait a minute - they're arguing that Armstrong's values didn't change as
much as others in the test. Then another guy in the group had the same thing
happen to him.

They have this huge database of some 7 riders for whom they're setting the
standards for the entire world's 5 billion souls. Is any of this getting
through?

Compensation and adaptation. Rest is required for the cycle to
progress. Rest is a feature of all training. Without it, the body
would become overwhealmed and peak fitness would deteriorate.
