Dan C likes to insult people on many newsgroups. He must have a lot of time on his hands. Sometimes he does know what he's talking about so it's tough to just Plonk him. If you can get past his tricycle fetish then the rest of the stuff is true. Too bad the didn't have digital cameras way back when. The only reason I don't plonk his is to see what depths he has sunk to. Bill Baka |

Don't care if I'm fashionable or not - I'm bike commuting in the cold! That seems like a good idea since I have worn them over my glasses when I was doing some electronics at a company where the safety protocol required them. Too bad I didn't bag a pair or two. Bill Baka You regret not stealing them from that employer? Is that right, Bill? God forbid you have to go to Ace Hardware and spend $1.59 on a pair. You're friggin pathetic. You wanted us all to believe you were a tough guy? Bugger off, liar. I've found the cheapo kind don't work for me; they fog up and don't fit well. I have looked into better goggles and some might work but they have to fit the balaclava and helmet and it's just too much hassle. I do NOT want my vision impaired while I'm riding. I ride because I enjoy it. If it's that much trouble I just take the train. I agree, but my point to Bill_the_Blowhard was based on the fact that he's a cheapskate, and has very little money to spend on anything. He would have to go with the cheapo kind, or nothing. I am unwillingly unemployed, there is a difference. BB That's because you have very little education, and no skills that anyone would pay money for. I've been telling you that for a long time. Don't care if I'm fashionable or not - I'm bike commuting in the cold! Eric Babula Milwaukee, WI USA Milwaukee can get pretty cold. I'm in NYC and I'm usually willing to commute down to 20F or so. I've done it colder but goggles really are needed then and I they either fog or block my vision. It's wind I really hate; my old legs are getting too creaky to deal with it. That's why I cheated and bought this: http://www.trekbikes.com/uk/en/bikes...us/valenci...- Hide quoted text - - Show quoted text - That bike looks like fun! Ha! I didn't even know Trek made anything like that. For temps from about 45F down to probably 30F, I'm using bicycle tights over my padded bike shorts. But, lower than 30F, I just use a cheapo pair of nylon windbreaker sweatpants (Target - $12 back in 2001, maybe) - that keeps the legs/knees working for me. Below 0F, I also add a layer of polyester long underwear, too. That's tough. I'm much wimpier. Mostly I wear black jeans (because I can also wear them to work). I wear different stuff sort of every 10 degrees. 20-30 is pretty much all my cold weather stuff. 30-40 is lighter gloves, lighter middle layer. And so on. I also have Hotronic toe warmers so I can wear regular shoes most of the cold weather. Now that's ultra wimpy. |

I'd say that, for me, probably 80% of the battle in cold-weather riding is stopping the wind from getting to you. In cold, I wear a windbreaker jacket ($8 on ebay) and windbreaker sweatpants ($12 at Target). Under that I wear a long-sleeve poly shirt, cycling shorts and maybe poly long underwear if it's cold enough) - don't need too much more than that, really. Once you get going, your body provides the heat. I have Thinsulate gloves which are fairly wind-resistant, with an underlayer of Silkskins, in case I have to patch a flat tire or something. Hiking boots on the feet on the real cold days and a balaclava on the head/face/neck with safety goggles. Pretty much no skin exposed once it gets down below 20F. YMMV. Cold is not an issue - you just have to dress appropriately. Now, for me, 34F and rainy/windy - that stinks!!! And, I found that I really, REALLY DO NOT like bicycle commuting in downtown Milwaukee rush-hour traffic when there's snow/ice/slush on the roads! Not fun. Those conditions will make me drive the car to work, for sure. Eric Babula Milwaukee, WI USA |
