This was in the thirties, on a central-Indiana farm. Stringing wire to homes a mile apart is more expensive than wiring homes that are adjacent, and farmers were poor. Dad had a "wind charger" for listening to the radio. I could have crawled up into the smokehouse attic (the smokehouse had been given to me as a playhouse) and looked at it, but I didn't learn that it was there until my sister (who raised her children in the farmhouse we grew up in) told me that it had blown away in a storm. I didn't even know it was a smokehouse, and haven't the slightest idea where the smoke came from and how it got out without leaving any stains or the slightest smell. ------------------- I think that having said "we moved to town" might be confusing. Me too, but we moved to town not long after I was born. Once a cast iron pan is cured it can be dried simply by putting it on the fire for a couple minutes. My procedure is to wash with soap and water. No abrasives. Then wipe dry with a dish towel. then heat for a couple minutes. My cast iron pans came with me from New Orleans and I haven’t lived there since 1987. -- duane With proper care good quality cast iron pots and pans can last for generations. Cheers My favorite 12" frying pan came from my grandmother. They don't require much care once they're cured unless you mistreat them. Plus a cast iron frying pan can be cheaper to use as it holds the heat a lot longer than the aluminium ones do. I have a small 6" cast iron frying pan I take on all my camping trips. Which is odd as aluminum has a higher specific heat capacity than cast iron. I like my cast iron pan though :-) One other great thing you can use a cast iron frying pan for is to warm your bed sheets on a cold night. VBEG LOL Cheers I think you should look that up. Aluminum has a lower specific heat value and a higher heat conduction. |

I had lunch at Wendy's today, and when I punched my receipt into our accounting program, I noticed that I'd gotten a senior discount without asking for it. My lunch turned out to be a very good choice. I love taco salad, but it's too much for a seventy-eight-year-old woman to eat just before exercising, and it gets soggy if you try to save some for later. But I looked at the menu and thought "how much salad are they going to give me for $3.29?". Turned out that it was a lot, but the chips, salsa, and "sour cream" (thick buttermilk) were in sealed packets I could save for later, and that combination would have made an excellent snack. The greens, cheese, and chili left me feeling a bit stuffed, but I planned to ride a short distance, then walk around in Big R for an hour. Pity our only Wendy's isn't anywhere near any route that keeps me out long enough to want a second meal. I have a large cast aluminum pot for gumbo and red beans.Â* It distributes and hold the heat pretty well.Â* Lighter than cast iron but harder to clean. I like my cast iron pan though :-) You have only 1?Â* You need at least an 8 inch for corn bread and that's too small for most other stuff.Â* g Alas I am a rank amateur but I will fix this as a smaller one would be nice. Next time though, a wooden handle with the helper. |
