There is no way that he's starting after the rest day.

"It's only a flesh wound."

Ouch. What is going on at this year's TdF anyway? I can't see anything
different in terms of cars & motorbikes & road choices. Is it the lack
of any single team taking control?

We're looking more like Rollerball all the time. Which might be good for
audience numbers, but at some point people will be pointing to us as a
sport too dangerous to continue. We suffer concussions and soldier on.
We fly through barbed-wire fences and soldier on. We botch up blood
transfusions and nearly kill ourselves and soldier on.

We all wanted Horner to continue. But who wasn't blown away by the
things he said as he was riding in to the finish, or being taken away on
the stretcher? The 'Tours team doctor knew how bad off he was and
assigned an ambulance and surgeon to stay with him those lonely 20 miles
after the crash. Let the rider decide if it's time. But when the rider
is incoherent, is he the person to make that decision?

"Rollerball" (the original, not the remake) and "They shoot horses,
don't they?"... is that us?

I seem to recall that 1991 was particulary bad, where about 20 riders
were injured in the first week, I remember world champion Rudy
Daehnens was seriously injured, Atle Klasvoll, Robert Millar, so
Lemond's team was decimated. CyclingNews had an article about head
injuries, the current practice has to be revised.

Wow. Looks like someone will be getting a tetanus shot. If he does
start on Tuesday then he has got to have the pain threshold of a block
of granite. I'm amazed he even finished today's stage with wounds like
that.

Hey Mike - you're going over for the last week of the Tour this year,
right? Let's hope there are still enough guys left standing to make
it interesting!

I'm wondering if they're going to institute some last-minute rule
changes allowing substitute riders... a severely-decimated team might
get so desperate they'll be drafting people from the sidelines... maybe
my son has a shot at the Pro level?

I'm really glad that I've got some interesting rides lined up that have
nothing to do with the TdF. Seriously, one of the big draws this year
was Chris Horner; losing him really kicked the wind out of me for a bit.
Beyond that, some classic battles between Contador and Evans and VDB
maybe, except that VDB is out and Contador possibly injured. My worst
fear is an ultra-conservative gameplan by Leopard/Trek, designed to
obtain the yellow through attrition, a plan that just could work.

I want carnage and bedlam, but the type of carnage I want to see is
riders going for it and blowing up, or maybe the opposite and catching
people off-guard. That can still happen, but it's going to be a dynamic
playlist.

In 2003 Hans de Clerc carried the Lanterne Rouge into Paris at 147th.
In 2002 it was Igor Flores at 153rd.
In 2001 Jimmy Caspar at 144th.
In 2000 Olivier Perraudeau at 127th.
In 1999 jacky Durand at 141st.

No, no subsitutes. However, I do expect that "no penalties" and "no
time limits" will be late changes to the rules before the Tour de
Rollerball wraps up.
