Default Drink, drugs, a hill, no brakes, no helmet and late for the pasties.

A NEWQUAY father died from severe head injuries as he raced to collect a
batch of pasties from a town bakery - on a bike with no brakes.

Jason Sandford, 33, had taken a cocktail of drink and drugs when he realised
he was late for the 'pasty run' at around 6.30pm on July 16 last year, an
inquest heard yesterday.

Police forensic reports revealed he had hurtled down a one-in-five gradient
slope before plunging over a two-metre high embankment onto the road below.

He was not wearing a helmet.

"The pair had spent the day roaming the town, visiting the soup kitchen, and
drinking cider.

"Mr Sandford had taken at least six valium tablets, and had injected heroin
scored from a dealer on Mount Wise, when he borrowed his friend's bike to do
a late pasty run.

"Julie Burgess, the mother of his daughter, Saffron, said: "He was an
amazing dad"

Indeed, and what a role model too.

"coroner Barrie Van Den Berg said: "I don't know what lessons we can learn
from this.".

Hmmmm I agree, it *is* hard to see how this sensible young chap could have
possibly done any more to keep himself safe. A freak accident, no doubt
about it.

I had a bike with no brakes for quite some time. I simply used my shoes to halt the bike. When I wore the soles away, I decided brake blocks were cheaper. Never fell off though.

Still, he did try to keep others safe, by not driving a motor vehicle

Or a Boeing 747, cross-channel ferry, cruise ship etc. Well done Mr.
Sandford, if only the rest of society showed his sense of responsibility.

Are all cyclists drug addicts? Cue taken from that Armstrong bloke
obviously.

Dave - Cyclists VOR. "Many people barely recognise the bicycle as a
legitimate mode of transport; it is either a toy for children or a
vehicle fit only for the poor and/or strange," Dave Horton, of Lancaster
University, wrote in an interim assessment of the Understanding Walking
and Cycling study. "For them, cycling is a bit embarrassing, they fail
to see its purpose, and have no interest in integrating it into their
lives, certainly on a regular basis."
