He owns the joint. He cant get fired. CSC can pull sponsorship, but Riis owns the team. So soon after the holier-than-thou routine with Basso? Aren't actions like that the primary cause of spontaneous human combustion? R Riis is mostlikely making a "statement" due to the events surrounding Basso. Ivan probably cut a deal with the Italian panel in an effort to get a a 2-year suspension reduced to 1. In return, he had to implicate someone. Riis is a perfect target. Nobody believes Riis did not know something was going on, and the authorities need to get a DS on record versus riders and doctors. Basso says, "Riis, I missed last year's Tour, and now this year's...I'm not getting any younger and I want to ride next year's Tour. But I had to offer some 'evidence' in return for some leniency. You know how it goes. So, I'm telling you this so you can decide whether you want your involvement to come out via the an uncontrolled media/WADA orgy, or you can hold a press conference, cry a little and humble yourself to your supporters". In other words, you can control the spin, or let others. I simply bought you some time to get your spin together. Thus, Riis goes public as a pre-emptive move. Basso's such a nice guy I like this scenario so much, I say if the real press conference isn't as good, we nominate this as the virtual press conference. Curtis L. Does this mean that Floyd Landis will not even be the first Tour de France winner to be stripped of the title? McQuade's weighed in that since it was more than eight years ago they can't strip the title, but the books may show no winner that year. I think I might legally change my name to No W. Inner and claim virtual- participation, virtual-win, post-purging victory! Go me! R |

Does this mean that Floyd Landis will not even be the first Tour de France winner to be stripped of the title? That's a good one. Riis might even steal that distinction from him. But, what about Garin in 1904? Was he stripped of the title or just DQ'd? I thought the official results of that edition weren't provided until some months after the race. Some pretty sad epilogues being written by the recent TdF champs-- 1996 Riis-- EPO admission 1997 Ullrich-- Puerto implications, etc. 1998 Pantani-- RIP 2006 Landis-- 'nuff said Include the Armstrong Era in there if you want but I ain't touchin' that one !!! |

He's now in sole possession of second place in all-time TdF wins. I wonder if they'll edit this highlight reel? http://video.cyclingnews.com/road/20...eo/?id=TDF1996 R |
