Default Police target anti-social cycling in Cambridge

http://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/News...e-14122012.htm

Undercover police officers will be manning traffic lights in Cambridge to
snare cyclists flouting road safety laws. The move comes as part of a major
crackdown on anti-social cycling in the city centre. Operation Pedalo will
see officers and Specials educating cyclists and enforcing cycling laws to
make Cambridge safer for all road users and clamp down on crime.

They will be patrolling hot spot areas in uniform and plain clothes to
reduce cycle crime, and check points for lighting and pavement offences.
Officers will also be patrolling on cycles around the city to catch
offenders in the act. The aim of the operation is to reduce road deaths and
casualties amongst cyclists, reduce cycle crime and anti-social cycling in
the city.

Areas such as Market Street, Sidney Street, Downing Street, Regent Street,
Drummer Street, St Andrew's Street, Arbury Road, Mill Road, Hills Road and
Elizabeth Way bridge will be targeted during the operation, which starts
today. Officers will be patrolling at traffic light junctions looking out
for those who commit red-light offences.

The Lights Instead of Tickets scheme will be in action during Operation
Pedalo, the scheme which gives those caught riding without lights seven days
to buy new lights to avoid paying the fine.

Chief Inspector Nick Church said: "This operation is about educating
cyclists as well as enforcing the law. "There is a lot of dangerous cycling
within Cambridge and our aim is to tackle this problem and reduce the number
of collisions. "Cyclists stopped without lights will be given the option of
participating in the LIT scheme, inconsiderate and dangerous cycling will
not be tolerated. "We want to make the streets of Cambridge a safe place
for all road users and pedestrians."

I have also posted this to the censored group as I'm sure the people there
would like to be warned of the crackdown.

Sharp intake of breath
Oh dear, I don't know about that - they're all law abiding cyclists in
that group.

You may be inviting a rejection because your message will appeared to
have been posted by mistake and/or is not in accordance with their
mission posting policy (have you referred to the notification they
have previously sent you?) and/or it misses the point, is overly
specific, not constructive, rude, a flame, personal abuse or, just
simply, needlessly inflammatory.

On the other hand, it may pass moderation but by the time it does,
Operation Pedalo will have been concluded and already deemed a 'total
success' by Chief Inspector Nick Church of the Cambridge Police.
=========================================

Well, it is on-topic and should be of interest to cyclists. Anyway, we'll
see.

Congratulations! Your post got through - maybe the mods are softening
after all.

Thanks! I really didn't know if they'd accept it or not. Maybe things are
looking up.

They are going to need some extra staff.

Dave - Cyclists VOR. "Many people barely recognise the bicycle as a
legitimate mode of transport; it is either a toy for children or a
vehicle fit only for the poor and/or strange," Dave Horton, of Lancaster
University, wrote in an interim assessment of the Understanding Walking
and Cycling study. "For them, cycling is a bit embarrassing, they fail
to see its purpose, and have no interest in integrating it into their
lives, certainly on a regular basis."

The taxes should be paying for the cops to catch real criminals. You know, the ones that hurt, kill, steal. Running a red light doesn't cause any problems whatsoever. This is a truly pathetic display. The police are too thick to be able to catch real criminals.

By all means fine someone who causes an accident. But not one that they think might do in the future. You cannot predict the future.

Something tells me you wouldn't be much good on the Health and Safety
Executive.

Don't put me in the same room as the Health and Safety Executive. One of us will end up dead.

That is one title that just should not exist, ever, anywhere.

Obviously the same as the above. Speeding does not mean you are going to cause an accident.
