Default Rear Rack Extra Long Seat Stay Brackets--Do Any Bike Shops Sell Them?

My neighbor bought a Co-Pilot rear child seat that came with a Blackburn
Expedition rack (EX-1). He came over and told me that he was having
trouble installing it, and I finished his sentence with "the brackets
are too short, right?"

I told him he can order brackets that will work from:

The QBP part number for the 12" is RK2559.

Would any LBS stock such an item? 12" would be long enough, but the 16"
would be okay. Seems it would be a problem that's run into extremely
frequently by shops, since I know I've had to fabricate mounting
brackets for numerous bicycles. He doesn't want to kludge it by bolting
on an extension to the existing bracket. If it were a straight bracket
I'd make him some, but it's got the 90 degree twist in it which is
difficult with aluminum flat bar.

Strangely, the Jandd web site has 8" and 16" while QBP has 8" and 12". I
wonder if one of them has an error.

I told him to call Mike J.'s shop in Los Altos. Don't know if he tried
it yet.

After showing him three bikes in my fleet that have longer brackets
fabricated for the rear rack, he understands that it's a very common
problem, but I could not explain to him why the manufacturers don't
provide long enough brackets with the rack.

If I were looking to find an odd bike rack part locally, in-stock, I
would try the Rack and Road in San Carlos, on El Camino Real near Brittan.

You're right, but I get tired of people that feel obligated to respond
to posts when they have no knowledge of the subject at all. The store
referred to is not a bike shop, nor do they sell any rear racks at all.
The chance that they would have the part in question is nil.

I could probably make some for him, but if they're available for $10 or
so he'd rather buy them.

A child seat goes on the rack.

He was confusing car roof racks for bikes with the type that go on the
back of bikes.

eyeyehahahah donna laugh. you know its true. UKIT !

speaking with a handful of cyclists toting children, I find them very
capable and in control.
In fact I know a lot of dead people who are capable and in control.

It's a common issue. We've had some of the longer extensions in the past but
don't believe we've stocked them for some time. Not sure why it hasn't come
up recently. They don't give me a warm & fuzzy feeling (having such
important cargo hanging way back there supported by two pretty flimsy pieces
of metal) but I confess to never having heard of any issues and have seen
plenty of instances where people have bolted two of them together to make it
long enough. When I get back from France I'll see about adding some to the
auto-order system.

Thanks-
