7 Speed Shimano Upgrade
I want to upgrade my 7 speed system to 9 or 10 speed Shimano. Will my 7
speed crank/chainrings work with a Shimano 9 or 10 speed chain, or are the chainrings too thick? -- Mike DeMicco |

You'll need new shifters, Freehub body, cassette, chain and handlebar tape. You'll also need to re-dish your rear wheel. Mike- Will my 7
speed crank/chainrings work with a Shimano 9 or 10 speed chain, or are the chainrings too thick? BRBR Yep, the thickness isn't the issue but the ability for the left STI lever to shift the present front der. Another problem may be the lack of shift assist thingys, pins and ramps. I'm going with bar end shifters anyway, so issues with front shifting shouldn't be an issue. One of my bikes has a Shimano 9 speed drivetrain, bar end shifters, and non-ramped/pinned chainrings. It shifts fine - a bit noisy, perhaps, compared to a ramped & pinned chainring, but fine. |
