That article says
"The shifts are constant percentage increases, 17-18%
per ratio, and that means that the total range is 409%"
but the tenth root of 4.09 is about 1.151.

The numbers in the www.radfahren.de article are closer to being
consistent, but still not quite (even allowing for rounding):
Übersetzungsverhältnis: 409 Prozent
Gangsprünge: 2 x 17 und 8 x 13 Prozent
Two 18% and eight 14% jumps would only total a 397% range.
