Veteran cyclist killed by van rode more miles than most people drive, say family
The conviction of a van driver for killing a veteran club cyclist is
“some form of justice”, the victim’s family said today. William Cottrell, 47, failed to stop his Ford Transit at a give-way line and pulled out of a side road in Ealing without showing “due care and attention” in May 2016. He hit Frank Cubis, 75, of Greenford, who died of “catastrophic” injuries more than a month later. He was given a 12-month community order of 120 hours’ unpaid work and banned from driving for a year. https://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/v...-a3786251.html -- Bod |

The problem with these cases is that the driver did not intend to hurt anyone. OTOH motor vehicles are so inherently dangerous that anyone choosing to use one on a public highway must take responsibility for it. I don't know what the answer is. Segregated car paths with a design speed of 5mph and a requirement that carists must get out and push whenever they cross roads or footways or private driveways would be a start. |
