cycles for several years on my Mom's Raleigh 3 speed. The bike was stolen, after painting, by bicycle thieves.

A '78 or?* Raleigh carbon steel replaced the 3 speed.

A knowledgeable type placed Frank Berto's approach to 10 speeds and after Rodale book in the Palm Beach Library and there Frank discussed the wonders of JIS.

Wonders indeed as I was completely unaware before that of interchangeable parts

I had a vague idea parts were proprietary. Of note and pivotal, LBS were not forthcoming on this crucial fact. The before internet/Sheldon Brown LBS Guild Factor.

First search for standards in bicycles short listed spindles

Well, JIS is sorta more like a general suggestion and
doesn't apply to everything. Regarding bicycle hub cones, as
concurrently discussed here, Sunshine Gyromaster and Shimano
Dura Ace 7300 series are notable outliers of cones which fit
no other product before or since and both were made/sold in
high volume.

CHEAPER TO MAKE, faster lower longer wider , more lasting, ?

I was stunned by Berto's information
