wrote: I just saw these two videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOR2UwZRBws https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WoOrSna7QBg Anything left out? I didn't watch the first one but the second is a rather basic explanation of how to use a file. Press down on the forward stroke and release the pressure on the backward stroke. Then we have the type of file. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File_%28tool%29 for even more detail see www.nicholsontool.com And even Nicholson isn't 100% complete as there are innumerable special files, to file the dovetail notch in a rifle barrel to mount the front sight, for example :-) Then after you figure out which file to use you need to learn to use it :-) Try clamping a piece of 1 inch diameter rod vertically in a vice and file the end square and flat. Perfectly flat and square so that when you check it with a try-square you can't see light. But in reality files aren't use all that much these days in contrast to the past when they were an important tool for the metal worker. Today you tell someone to "make that flat" and they go over to a grinder or a belt sander. -- Cheers, John B. |

You can sharpen an axe or a knife or remove small damages from just about anything. But yes, a vise is what makes it really fun! -- underground experts united http://user.it.uu.se/~embe8573 |

True, but how many people to day spend their days sharpening an axe :-) But if you like axes you might look at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qb_YNZn_kaQ -- Cheers, John B. |

I get it lumber is a resource that doesn't grow on trees but this is bringing matters to a head. -- underground experts united http://user.it.uu.se/~embe8573 |
