Default Hull neighbours horrified to find convicted rapist lives just doors away

QUOTE:
Residents living on an east Hull street say they were horrified to learn they were living next door to a rapist.

Neighbours on Brazil Street, off Holderness Road, have told how they found out they were living in the midst of a man convicted of a terrifying crime after someone recognised him in the background of a video call.

It is understood Graham Kelly was living in shared housing in Brazil Street, and was spotted by an unsuspecting flatmate's loved one who recognised him when he walked in on a video-call.

Kelly, now 67, was convicted in 2012 and sentenced to eight years in prison after he raped a woman at knifepoint.

He had stalked his victim for five weeks before jumping over a fence armed with an 8 inch carving knife and raping her in a stable near Beverley.

In an attempt to save herself, the woman convinced Kelly she liked him and asked him back to her house for coffee so police could arrest him.

As she was cycling back to her home, the woman saw a neighbour and asked him to call the police. When she arrived home, Kelly was waiting for her outside. The police arrived just ten minutes later and he was arrested.

A jury took just 30 minutes to deliver a unanimous verdict at Hull Crown Court in 2012.

Speaking after the verdict, Detective Constable Claire Burnett said Kelly had a dangerous obsession with his victim.

DC Burnett said: "He pursued her relentlessly. He followed her, waited near her home and sent her text messages."

Residents of Brazil Street were shocked and scared after finding out about Kelly's crimes and have been living amongst him without a clue for two years.

One neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: "When he first moved here he was quite anxious and on edge but we got to know him and I took him dinner sometimes.

"He'd said he'd never been in jail and just said that he'd split up with his ex-wife. There was nothing that gave it away and he used a different last name."

However, Kelly's cover was blown two weeks ago when he was in the background of a flatmate's video call and was recognised by the person on the other side of it.

The neighbour said: "The person asked who that was and he said it was who he shared his flat with. The person said, 'Let me get back to you I recognise his face'.

"They found a newspaper article and he came out to show us all. We're all quite shocked because of the fact he had befriended us."

The neighbour said they spoke with Kelly after everyone had found out and claims he waved at them and gave them a "big, cheesy grin".
