BOSTON – A 53-year-old Abington man who used a mountain bike as his getaway car was sentenced Friday in U.S. District Court to 3½ years in prison for three bank robberies last year in Quincy, Boston and Cambridge..

John Soule pleaded guilty and was ordered to serve 42 months, followed by three years of supervised release. He must also pay $58,551 in restitution.

He was charged with holding up an Eastern Bank in Cambridge on July 12, 2017, a Webster Bank on Franklin Street in Boston on Aug. 9 and the Rockland Trust on Quincy Street in Quincy on Sept. 8.

Soule’s stick-up style was similar in all three crimes. He entered the bank wearing a hat, sunglasses and gloves, and jumped over the teller’s counter and demanded money. In the Cambridge robbery he said he had a knife and in Quincy he entered the bank’s vault and helped himself to more than $42,000, his biggest haul.

Video surveillance cameras captured images of Soule on a mountain bike moments before and immediately after the robberies.

Soule was arrested in September 2017 with over $8,000 in his possession. He has been jailed since his arrest.

He was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge F. Dennis Saylor IV.
