Cycling kills more than the floods
Two cyclists were killed when they were struck by a car involved in a police incident in a flood-hit village. It looks like cycling must be quite dangerous. 1 person killed as a result of the floods. 2 cyclists killed as a result of the floods. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-berkshire-26184164 Judith |

Spot the words: "flood-hit" below: Two cyclists have died after they were struck by a car following a police incident in a flood-hit village. I guess that the police car was unmarked: no hi-viz stripes, and the cyclists were clothed as per the Highway Code: hi-viz, helmets etc. and the cyclists just did not see the police car and rode in front of it. I saw the report on teletext, but the BBC news website is no clearer: QUOTE: Two cyclists were killed when they were struck by a car after police were called to a village. Officers were responding to a "fear-for-welfare" call in Purley Rise, Purley on Thames, West Berkshire, at about 21:00 GMT on Thursday. A black BMW related to the call-out struck the cyclists, who both died at the scene, Thames Valley Police said. The driver was later arrested. The Independent Police Complaints Commission has been informed. A police spokesman said officers were supporting next of kin. The road was closed between the junctions of Westbury Lane and Sherwood Rise during investigations. Bill Ayling, a councillor on Purley on Thames Parish Council, said he was "absolutely shocked" to hear of the deaths. He added: "I know the road very well. It is well lit at night and it's up on a hill." Parish council chairman Rick Jones said: "It's a shock. It's a very quiet village normally." Anyone who witnessed the collision or saw the BMW beforehand is asked to contact police. ENDQUOTE That is a confused tale. It isn't clear whether the cyclists were police officers, whether the (apparently arrested) driver was a police officer or whether no-one involved in the RTA was a police officer. The meaning of "black BMW related to the call-out" is also unclear. Does that mean that it was a police vehicle? If it were not, why has the IPCC been informed? It's a curiously non-informative story, and reads as though the copy-writer couldn't decide whether it was about cycling, a traffic incident, a police incident or was flood-related. No doubt the situation will become clearer in time. |
