Thankyou Graham Parker Northampton UK Plating is basically the same process regardless of the metal being plated. The final finish is approximately the finish before dipping in the plating tank. As for copper plating, quite frequently objects to be chrome plated are first copper plated ( something to do with adhesion of the plating I believe) so check with a few chrome shops and you will likely find a place that can do it. Probably the major cost item in plating is the preparation, polishing, dent filling, etc. If you would be happy with a dull finish you could have it bead blaster which leaves a matt finish but be much cheaper. But beware if you try to do the preparation work yourself, any defect that you can see before it is plated you will still be able to see after it is plated. -- John B. |

I've got a copper plated frame in the living room, and i have to polish it from time to time to remove fingers and smudges. The plating is also pretty soft, so if you use the bike expect it to devellop 'patina' in record time -- /Marten info(apestaartje)m-gineering(punt)nl |

Surface needs to be clean of any contaminants (wax, oil, crud, paint, rust, polishing paste etc)and ideally polished smooth for a nice appearance. Consult with a plater about surface finish requirements and ask to see examples. Every blemish scratch and ding will magnify once plated. If you don't mind it looking like crap then don't polish it. Copper is electroplated to the substrate. If you don't want it plated, then Gene's suggestion of similar colored paint is apt. Cheaper too. Plating firms have been relentlessly tortured by regulation to near extinction. Few obstinate firms have survived and their future looks bleak. Background on electroplating processes: http://www.saskschools.ca/curr_conte...x/redox3_4.htm p.s. A bicycle frame requires multiple cathode placement to get even plate coverage. -- Andrew Muzi www.yellowjersey.org/ Open every day since 1 April, 1971 |

he's a banker !
riders get worked up abt paint, finish. the paint color catalog is worth your time. BTW have you viewed MB's new gullwing's looooong nose chrome finish ? could be there's a copper to go with. pollutional minor industries like fabric dyeing, once rife along the Susquehanna in Pennsylvania leading to the disease stricken Cheeseapeake (sic) dumped the used dye stuff water from large bioling kettle directly into the river. now, that dumping occurs at for example Lesotho. |
