King Cage - Bottle Cage Failures
yup. I had residual stress from two first BC failures then hooked the
third with a shock cord, other end tied to Grant's Tomb now muh Third Hand 3 in one split fur no good reason. Remember those 350 Yamaha welds....those were the days. |

I think that anyone that spends $50 on a Nitto cage is as equally idiotic as someone that buys a carbon fiber cage. Not equal at all. Nitto = beauty = Idiot with class. CFRP = hideous = Idiot that is trying hard to become a moron. I got my Nittos when they were only $38 and when my 401K was going to let me retire before I turned 85. You know that there is no recession as long as people are buying $50 water bottle cages. Or $900 cranksets or $500 brake calipers or $5000 plastic frames or $2000 wheels or {insert yer favorite overpriced bike gewgaw here}. |

Have any of you seen this before? Other than the durability issue these seem to be nice cages. Are there any other stainless steel cages that are more durable? Thanks, Steve Dear Steve, Aluminum, failures at the weld after ~200 km: http://www.m-gineering.nl/crack.htm Cheers, Carl Fogel residual stress was a component. see the way the cage has sprung open? Carl, Jim, Residual stress seems to be an issue with these as well as the asymmetry of the one side of the cage is significantly different from the other side. Steve |

Based on looking at the construction quality, I'd say the Forte Performance Terra Lite Stainless MTB Cage is one of the strongest. Better design than the King Cages in terms of how the mounting plate is welded to the tubing. When I lay my lowracer down on the non drive side, it rests on the cage, so I tend to break them frequently. The solution isn't a stronger cage, which will transfer the force to the braze-ons and damage the frame, especially if it's an aluminum frame with Rivnuts. I'd buy a set of "http://www.lickbike.com/productpage.aspx?PART_NUM_SUB=%273242-00%27" and mount them snug, but not so tight that they can't rotate around the tube (assuming it's round tubing!). I use these on one of my folding bikes where it's necessary to rotate the cage out the way when folding the bike. The TwoFish stainless 'quick cage' is a nice solution: http://www.twofish.biz/bike.html |

What problems with alumnium cages? I have aluminum cages on all my bikes (probably over a dozen cages altogether, from Blackburn, American Classic, Cobra, REG, and others), none less than 20 years old, and no failures of any type. I used to use aluminum cages from Blackburn and American Classic, but the aluminum rubbed off on the bottles, making them dirty. Plus they didn't hold bottles as securely over bad bumps as my King steel cages. |

It moves a lot when you put the bottle in or remove it. |

The biggest issue is that they mark up the bottles. The second is that they tend to break if hit, as one poster mentioned happens when he lays his bike down on the non-drivetrain side. I don't think I've ever broken a stainless cage, while I have broken a couple of aluminum cages. |

These are handmade, and I'll bet you a nickel that the manufacturer will stand behind them. I've had a pair for about 5 years. Work great. Have you tried their titanium tire levers? The greatest -- they work exceptionally well on tight tires. Larry, Yes, I called King Cage and they will be replacing the unit. I am also going to include some photos of the break area for them to analyze. One thing I noticed is that the cage did not seem to hold the bottle symmetrically. One of the down tubes (the side that broke) has a nice flat spot worn on it whereas the other side looks untouched. Best, Steve |
