Default Groundbreaking puncture-proof tyre invented - and thousands ofcyclists have bought a pai

QUOTE:
THOUSANDS of Brits are dumping their old bike tyres for a cyclist's dream - a puncture-proof alternative. The new tyre, which has undergone 15 years of research and development, is capable of riding over thorns, nails, potholes and broken glass without suffering a puncture.

The groundbreaking invention, made by South Korean manufacturer Tannus, is now being dubbed the "tyre for life".

It can also last for at least 5,000 miles without being changed.

Some users have even claimed being able to travel more than 12,000 miles on a single set - the distance between London and Melbourne.

More than 50,000 cyclists in the UK have already swapped their ordinary tyres for the Tannus brand with similar figures in the US. CEO Jazz Walia said the product will keep people safer as they will not have to deal with a puncture in the dark.

The Essex-born businessman said: “For safety reasons alone this is an absolute no brainer, customers will never have to deal with a puncture in the dark or a blowout in the middle of rush hour ever again.

“We have spent years perfecting this tyre and I can honestly say it does what it says on the tin.

“Competitors have tried to copy our formula but our materials and ingredients have remained secret and we are years ahead of anyone else in this field.” Although the product has already received commercial success, Mr Walia claims retailers are reluctant to sell the product.

He said: “I think we are Britain’s best kept secret, the specialist bike riders know all about us but your average cyclist just accepts what he buys in the shop and to be honest some retailers are reluctant to sell our product.

“Why? Because they won’t have customers returning regularly to order new wheels and tyres and buy puncture repair kits!

“However, with almost two million people riding bikes in the UK, I feel the public has the right to choose. “Also during lockdown due to COVID-19 there’s been a 200 percent surge in people taking to their bikes and we maintain riders will be safer and more secure on our tyres..

“Take the UK’s problems with potholes for example, riding on airless tyres could save thousands being injured every year.

“What we're seeing now post lockdown is a real shift in priorities from consumers, there's been a real emphasis on sustainability and people are more conscious than ever of their carbon footprint.”

Tannus tyres start from just £29.99 and come in all sizes and colours.

Wow airless tyres who would a thunk it?

All these people it seems :-

Oh and it only costs that to fit them if you already have the hooked
rims required.

Is that what was being described - a new sort of solid tyre?

They're OK for fork-lift trucks.

Oh look, he's doing a "cycle retailers don't want you to know about
these" sales strategy. I suspect that shops aren't particularly
interested in his tyres because all previous attempts at puncture-proof
tyres have been a bit crap - even the Schwalbe Marathons are heavy and
dead compared to a more responsive but less "safe" regular tyre, and all
other approaches tend to be worse - poor ride comfort, poor grip and
rapid wear. There's a development in off-road tyres that seems more
likely to succeed - a foam inner tyre that sits against the rim inside
a regular tubeless tyre, and only comes into play when the tyre bottoms
out or flats. It does add unwanted mass and yes it reduces effective
tyre volume, but it doesn't otherwise hinder the performance of your
proper tyre of choice.

I use Schwalbe Durano Plus - never had a puncture on them.

I had Schwalbe Super Moto Evolution (effectively a high-end Big Apple)
on my utility bike, I don't think I ever had a puncture with those. My
newest build is shod with Schwalbe Crazy Bobs because I wanted more
grip for a mix of on/off road riding. They're a fair bit heavier than
the Moto but still seem to roll quite well - all I have to do now is
get out in the cold wet and windy to see how well they last.

It's basically a thick wide foam rim strip so you still have a small tube to pump up for the essential pneumatic ride. The foam is apparently stiff enough to isolate the tube 15 mm from puncturing objects yet flexible and elastic enough to provide a good ride and not deteriorate quickly. Even if the tube goes flat it isn't that big a deal as the foam occupies so much of the tire you can still ride. Any believer in Plan Bs -- I knew cynic who got astonishingly far summarily tossing all Plan As as a waste of time and immediately going to Plan B -- should like such a solution _if_ the foam works.

The problem is a "stiff yet flexible" material sounds like nonobtainium, maybe even a contradiction in terms.

Similarly, on a related matter is getting a material that is "impermeable yet tough" for tubes so you only need to pump up once a year. Unfortunately the limit line in elasticity vs permeability is hard to cross, i.e., latex is elastic but it doesn't hold air, polyester holds air but isn't elastic. Butyl rubber makes it across that frontier. Maybe they can laminate flakes of the old Saran wrap plastic into tubeless tires . . .

One known drawback is Tannus weighs 2X the sealants in tubeless tires.

All the above fits into my Philosophy of Pneumatic Tire Punctures:

"There is no 100% effective magic bullet against flat tires that but like a bad back, the problem can be managed to not be much of an issue."

We're just not there yet.

I strongly suspect the part of the move to larger lower pressure tires is driven by punctures. You may get an order of magnitude more time before a fat low pressure tire goes flat.

Maybe I can get into Guinness by logging the most punctures in a day ~ several million!

You can't do that if the tires go flat.
