The incident was initiated and then serially escalated by the cyclist.

Using caustic soda against him was well outside the Geneva Convention,
but he was the one who started the whole childish business, apparently
because he believed that the car in which the defendant was a passenger
had passed him "too close" (whatever that may mean).
