Disk brakes
Pat in TX Wrote: squeal? One of mine squeals and I can't seem to get it to stop! Squeal is usually dust, grit or sand. Take the wheel off and run a piece of clean rag between the pads and wipe the disk over. Worst case it can be sand behind the pads. Carefully pop them out and more clean rag. For cars they have a goo that goes on the back of the pads to exclude dust but bike should never get that bad. Over 10,000 km on hydraulic Shimano 525 disks and not a problem. Still on original pads. The guy the shop said that cheaper disks cause many problems, but the expensive ones don't. Oh well. Thanks Well what kind of discs' are on there? Mine are Hayes cable discs' and they work great, no problems at all. Ken -- New cycling jersey: $49 new cycling shorts: $39 Not being a slave to the petrol pump: priceless. |

I'm lucky to get 1500 (urban) km out of a set of Hopes (though the Hopes on the trike are still OK after 7000). -- Dave Larrington - http://www.legslarry.beerdrinkers.co.uk/ If you are choking on an ice cube, simply pour a jug of boiling water down your throat and presto! The blockage is almost instantly removed. |

Disk brakes

I bought a new bike with disk brakes on the front.. but they small disk was not straight and I had to take it back. I've been told by someone that these cause a lot of problems, and by another person that they're ok. I don't need any fancy brakes for riding around town. Should I try to get the bike shop to give me a bike with normal brakes? Thanks Disks are good, at least on the front. Unlike rim brakes, disks lose very little of their stopping power when wet (like,,, in the rain). Is being able to stop well in the rain important around town? ~~~~~~ |
