WTB: FS MTB, I've got $2500 to spend... Heckler?
The Heckler fits your bill nicely. I am on my 3rd SC now (second
Heckler) and won't go to another brand. You could run into a bit of a snag staying under $2500, but you could do it. The Fox fork is good (I am a Marzocchi guy, but Fox is good). If you are not in the US then Scott would be a good diversion from SC. The Ellsworth id is killer as well (mucho, mucho dinero). Yeti is back and making good stuff again as well. Have fun looking and finding the perfect bike! K. -- Don't give up, don't ever give up. -------------------------- Posted via cyclingforums.com http://www.cyclingforums.com |

What are some of the better mountain bikes to consider in this price
range? I am looking for something lightweight for part time XC and climbing, but durable enough for free riding, i.e., climbing up over rocks, doing small drops (~3 ft), and generally blasting through rocky/rooty descents. I'm currently looking at a Santa Cruz Heckler with a 5th Element Coil and Fox TALAS RLC fork. What else should I consider before putting my $ on the Heckler. -- rec.bicycles.off-road is moderated by volunteers. When you drop that much on a bike, you may as well get a real botique bike that works, instead of a bike manufactured by someone else for a marketing and (crappy) design company like santa crud. Everyone knows it's better to drop a couple hundred more on a - comparatively - inferior bike. http://www.titusti.com/loco_flyer.pdf How, exactly, can suggesting better products to a new-bike-shopper be trolling? I started out looking at the Slayer (plus a demo ride on single track)
but heard about some problems with the pivots, and that is the kind of problem that I am having with my current 4-bar linkage suspension. I am looking for a robust frame the will require minimal maintenance from ride to ride and over the years. Although I like the Slayer's traditional bicycle frame configuration/appearance, i.e., a main triangle and a rear triangle, I would welcome a "lowered" top tube design that is of benefit in panic stops (and remounting) along steep or off-camber trails. Understandably, as the suspension travel increases, the step-over height also tends to increase (for a fixed frame configuration). (TJ Poseno) wrote in message . com... (HKEK) wrote in message m... ID check out the Rocky Mountain Slayer, it is awesome, a more downhilish fork, but with lockouts, and hydraulic disks. Its an awesome bike. Also the Rocky Mountian Instinct, it has less travel though. But XTR components. -- rec.bicycles.off-road is moderated by volunteers. Chris Ahhh, sarcasm. What a gift. You must be so proud. I'm still trying to figure out how talking trash about a bike that has a great reputation is helpful. Before the flashy marketing there were two bikes; the Tazmon then the Heckler. Several years and many frames later they are world renowned for making great bikes that don't break the bank, aren't over-engineered to death and take a beating, period. I also don't gethow recommending a bike that has a rate of return due to frame failure higher than most every other maker is good advice. I'm cool with someone not wanting to ride an SC, but jealousy is not an attractive trait. Since cheaper is better let's send this person to Wal-mart. I heard they have some new folding mtbs for less than $200! Remember that success is evil and we all need to crawl into our garages and weld up our own rigs or it's all just a waste, I mean if you don't build it with your own hands your not down and can't get into that dew commercial and live in the lands of milk and honey and get all the chicks and be "mad real" and have all the answers and blah, blah, blah, troll, troll, troll your boat... Was that enough irony for you? Get out more and ride your bike. Damn. Now I feel like you won't like me and go riding next weekend. Have fun. Chris I expect that kind of answer from a leg-humping santa crud blind brand loyalist, Chris. The Loco is easily a much better bike by design, maufacture and finish. Like I said, santa crud is all marketing and crappy design. Titus builds bikes, period. Thanks for the heads-up on the Loco special, Chris. That makes anyone who buys a santa crud XC single pivot FS for more money even more of a fool. JD |
