Default highways agency consultation

The highways agency are sending a rep to 'inform' cyclists about their
plans for the Woodhead road in the peak District.

The rep will attend kirklees public cycling meeting, next Monday at
7.30pm Dewsbury Sports centre

The agency plans a bypass in South manchseter to alleviate traffic
jams, the concern has been that doing so will mean a constant stream
of vehicles past 2 difficult junctions at the base of Holme Moss and
the Glossop road. Both of which are popular with cyclists.

The agency also plans to put traffic lights at the flouch junction,
near langsett.

It is estimated that queues of 300m will form at this point and they
have admitted they have given no thought to cyclists.

Following on from Martyn Bolt's message. . .

The HA will waffle and say things like "we'll do our best" and "we
looked at that but it wasn't possible" : If you assume that when they
open their mouths they are lying you won't be far wrong. Take NOTHING
on trust. Don't let "no decisions have been made yet" or "it's too late
now" stop you asking high levels to address safety issues. INSIST on
the full safety risk assessment (err there won't be one) and INSIST on
it BEFORE any limit of consultation period. In writing.

As if things weren't bad enough already on the A628 around Crowden.
Every time I've travelled that way, something seems to have knocked a
huge chunk out of a roadside wall - apparently in a different place
each time! Having ridden this bit of road a few years ago, I actually
found it more unpleasant - due to the twisting nature, the volume of
traffic, and the presence of a good few articulated lorries - than all
the suffering on the ascent of Holme Moss put together.
