MTB bar length criteria?

What should I be considering when it comes to deciding bar length? I want a
small rise, a bit of a curve back (slightly less than straight).

Is shoulder-width the right length for the bar? Other criteria?

Shoulder width is about right. If you ride on single-tracks without much
clearance you might want a little narrower, if you ride technical down-
hills and need to hold the bars steady against large turning forces then
a bit wider might suit.

The tapered part near the stem, room for brake levers, shifters, grips
and bar ends make my MTB bars always wider than my shoulder width. Riser
bars are worse because of the extra bent.
My MTB bars need to be about 7 cm wider than my dropbars on my road
bikes. I hate that.
