Default "Boy killed as car mounts pavement"

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/bristol/8030641.stm

"An 11-year-old boy has died after a car mounted a pavement and
crashed into a group of pedestrians in Bristol.

The female driver of the white Ford Focus left the scene of the
incident in Fastfield Road, Westbury-on-Trym, leaving the boy trapped
underneath.

A man was treated for minor injuries, while three other children at
the scene were not injured.

Police have appealed for witnesses to the crash, which happened at
2115 BST on Friday.

The woman has been described as white, with long blonde hair and in
her mid-30s."

Any bets as to the driver's punishment if any? If pavements are no
safe from drivers where is? Children are sometimes killed by cars even
in driveways too and the walls of bedrooms are demolished by crashing
cars. Isn't it also ironic that cyclists ride on pavements to try to
avoid dangerous drivers?

They'll have to find the driver first.

Tell me Dough, how often does this happen that someone is killed by a
car while walking on the pavement, and the car is officially registered,
insured, MOT and the driver has full driving licence and not intoxicated?
And don't add up the statistics this way:

Number of cars driving (or parked) on pavements plus...
Number of cars driving otherwhere than roads plus...
Number of pedestrians killed (or nearly killed)

How, in a practical manner, do you propose to stop it happening, Doug?

Exactly what to happen? The driver hasn't been found, so this is not
related to the system of regulated car transport in general. It is more
like a criminal act, the driver will be found and end up in prison.

Do you want me to stop going to work by the only means of transport
possible, having a clean accident record for 40 more years and never
caused any trouble? Who then will pay the taxes for your services?

What about that cyclist that deliberately and pre-meditatedly rode into a
group of youngsters on a pavement and killed a young girl? What should
happen to him? The maximum fine is only 2000 pounds, not much for a life.

Can I caution the members of this group to be careful how they treat Doug's
anti-car posts. He is intent on destroying this newsgroup just as he almost
destroyed uk.transport.

That was the only such incident of 08 and not one has happened since.
Although, it seems odd that he was doing 20mph on the road and felt the need
to deliberately mount the pavement to kill this poor girl.

He was fined 2200 pounds, the maximum is actually 2500. His bike was also
illegal as it had no pedal reflectors.
