But I'd rather not smash my face in, not even for six grand, so I
don't use cycle lanes much.

"Despite wearing a helmet, he smashed his cheekbone, which left him
with facial numbness and difficulty chewing. "

The only people who will be surprised that helmets don't protect the
cheekbones are Thompson, Rivara and Thompson, who think they prevent
almost all mid-facial injuries.

Is it possible that the helmet caused the cheekbone to break? Although
it is also possible that the helmet prevented a more serious injury.

A friend recently damaged her cheekbone, she was wearing a helmet.

I think in this collision the mention of the helmet by the reporter is
a non-sequitur. "Despite wearing elbow pads, the rider grazed his
knee badly".

If he hadn't have worn a helmet, you can be pretty sure that the
defence would have argued that the lack of a helmet contributed to his
injuries.

I wonder if there are statistics anywhere that detail the average
payout per prosecution for both helmet wearers and non-helmet wearers!

I think we must add at least one BBC reporter to the list of people
who are surprised that helmets don't protect the cheekbones:-)

At the Court of Session in Edinburgh on Friday, a judge awarded him
£5,750 for the injuries.

Lord Bannatyne rejected arguments ......... that Mr Anderson might
have been partly to blame.

Good job he was wearing his helmet as his damages would no doubt have
been cut accordingly as he could have "contributed" to his injuries by
his negligence in not wearing one.
