Cyclist injured after collision with car in city cycle lane

On Thu, 10 Jun 2010 12:43:00 +0100 (BST), (Jon (relating to a cyclist 'doored' on Trumpington Road neat the junction with Brooklands Avenue) may be evidence that the cycle lane there adjacent to parked cars really is as dangerous as some here have claimed. I note that " the rider *collided* with a car door that had just been opened " Obviously the cyclist was cycling too fast if he could not take evasive action. What if it had been a child popping out from between two cars? This is the sort of total bollox that we expect from you. At whatever speed you are travelling (even if walking), if a door is opened directly in front of you will not be able to avoid it. I'm with most here that the cyclist should not have been in the cycle lane as it was poorly designed if not to allow a metre between parked cars and the lane, but that's besides the point. The lane was put there by the authorities and the inocent cyclist was using it. The ignorant car driver opened the door without checking it was safe to do so. You should go for a date with D**g and you can both argue bollox with each other. |

It happens to me a few time a year, I never stop because I am far enough out for it not to matter. They often apologise though, as you go by, which is nice. I'm with most here that the cyclist should not have been in the cycle lane as it was poorly designed if not to allow a metre between parked cars and the lane, but that's besides the point. The lane was put there by the authorities and the inocent cyclist was using it. Can we replace inocent with naive? or even stupid? The ignorant car driver opened the door without checking it was safe to do so. With all the gazillions of car doors that are flung open each day by various people from kids, people in a hurry to just plain knobs, you would expect a few of them to be into the path of a cyclist. The important thing is not to be that cyclist. |

But bus drivers should predict the actions of cyclists to avoid braking? -- Dave - intelligent enough to realise that a push bike is a kid's toy, not a viable form of transport. |

Mrcheerful wrote: No the advice for cyclists, which you should know by now even as a motorist, is to distance themselves from the parked car 'door zone' and use the outer car lane instead, even when hooted at by impatient drivers. That way they also have more chance of seeing a child coming from the concealment provided by parked cars. Of course, it is even more difficult for cyclists when cars are parked in a cycle lane, as often happens. And, of course, when idiot councils build stupid cycle lanes in this "dooring zone" cyclists get flack from motorists for not using them. -- Jonathan Amery.
