Major snippage Ed Dolan wrote:" No, I am a true hermit. I will

snippage

Yo Ed,

Before you get on your high horse (bad pun for Mr. Ed) about snippage,
don't even begin to lecture me about usenettiquette with what you've
done to these threads.

Because you're one for exactitude, refer to yourself as you truly are
on this forum: A misfit. You're not a hermit. A hermit withdraws
from society and lives in seclusion whereas a misfit is one who is
unable to adjust to one's environment or circumstances or is
considered to be disturbingly different from others. If you were a
hermit, you wouldn't be here. However, as a misfit you're doing an
outstanding job.

Slow Joe Recumbo

I am only on two threads at the present, although others keep proliferating
these two threads by changing the subject headings. But even so, I am not in
any way interfering with on topic posting.

I once went almost 5 years without hardly speaking to a soul, other than a
few amenities here and there. I think that qualifies me to consider myself a
hermit. Even now, I hardly have much contact with anyone. I have always
preferred my own company to anyone else's. But this is not for the weak of
heart. In order to be able to do this, you have to develop a sterling
character that you can live with. Otherwise, severe psychiatric problems
could easily ensue.

Was Scott here when you got here? Scott was a very fun person to debate
with. He almost convinced me that women's lib has made women's lives
worse...

I think Scott (of Arizona?) has left this group for greener pastures
elsewhere, mainly because of me I am afraid. We could never see eye to

eye
on anything under the sun. He left in disgust because he could not

counter
my arguments (but who the hell can). However, if he was not in favor of
women's lib, then I think we would finally have found something we could
agree on....

Yet again, Mr. Ed can not keep alt.rec.bicycles.recumbent participants
straight. Beth is referring to Scott “Freewheeling” [1] who has a V-Rex
with a Rohloff hub, while Mr. Ed is thinking of "Roknutz" Scott who
lives in the Sierra Nevada mountains in southern California and has a
Tour Easy and a GTT that he rides with his wife Jodi.

I always defer to Mr. Tom in these matters as he is the archivist of the
group. If everyone here would use a proper FULL name instead of these
confounded first names only and other monikers, maybe I could keep the lot
of you straight.

That is assuming it is really dwindling in the first place, the problem

is
and has always been finding the stuff and getting it out. For instance
Russia has far more reserves than the arab countries but the development

has
been limited and existing equipment is far behind the times. Canada

oddly
enough has even bigger reserves but it has been expensive to extract,

we've
only scratched the surface in deep water exploration.

As always its merely a question of time, innovation and money, I've been
hearing this "we're running out of oil" garbage for 30+ years now

Discoveries of new oil fields peaked over 30 years ago.

True but part of the reason is because of the sheer size of the fields
discovered. Much of the problem with discovery and exploration isn't that
new fields do not exist but that it is too expensive at the time to recover
it, this was once the case with the North Sea and Gulf of Mexico but as time
goes on technology prevailed and it became cost effective

Saudi Arabia and Shell have both recently admitted that they
significantly overstated their oil reserves.

Mostly because of arcane methods of accounting

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/3524438.stm

Indonesia may drop out of OPEC, as it has become a net oil importer.

True but read why (at the very bottom)

http://biz.yahoo.com/rc/040713/energ...sia_oil_1.html

Production is declining in the North Sea fields.

True except for Denmark

Production is declining in the primary oil field in China.

Maybe not

http://www.thestandard.com.hk/thesta...515&intcatid=2

No new oil fields have been discovered (worldwide) in over 1-1/2 years.

Remember that many attempts [1] at future discoveries are hampered or
stopped by the stupidity of certain political figures [2] for purely
political reasons even when members of their own party in that area support
it [3]

http://www.enn.com/news/wire-stories.../reu_48920.asp

[1] Alaska
[2] Tom Daschle
[3] Govenor, legislature and Union leaders in Alaska

Demand for oil is rapidly increasing in India and China, which have 1/3
of the world's population.

Yup

New oil reserves are being created at an insignificant rate (if at all)
compared to extraction.

Tell that to Iran

http://www.iranexpert.com/2004/oilfield5july.htm

And Canada

http://www.geotimes.org/mar03/NN_canada.html

And Nigeria (even in the middle of a civil war)

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/3712265.stm

The marketplace will decide the outcome as it always has, in my opinion
we've only scratched the surface with exploration but that remains to be
seen, the market is already starting to adapt with hybrid cars meaning that
instead of complaining about gas guzzling SUV's running bikes off the road
you'll be complaining about even more Ford Escape hybrids

http://www.fordvehicles.com/escapehy...dex.asp?bhjs=0

People in the US live in denial.

No some of us just tend to be more optimistic than others, and again I've
heard this bilge for 30+ years since the first arab oil embargo in the early
70's. Its a simple process that has happened over and over again. Email me
in another 20 years and we'll see who was right.

1. Production slows as fields age
2. Oil prices go up
3. Oil discovery increases because its now more cost effective
4. Production increase because of #4
5. Prices stabilize and in many cases go down
6. Goto 1

But still Mother Nature is not making any more of it

Really? Since when?

Mother Nature is making it all the time, oil isn't just old dinosaurs
rotting away

http://www.encyclopedia.com/html/sec...Occurrence.asp

http://www.voicenet.com/~wbacon/documents/newoil.html

and it is becoming
increasing hard to find and extract. If the Middle East is not able to

keep
up with the world's demand (ever increasing year by year) that will be
something new under the sun for this generation.

That was part of the problem in the late 70's and early 80's however no OPEC
doesn't have the clout to rule the market like it once had which is why what
it does these days doesn't have as much effect on the market

I don't think drilling
under the Antarctic ice cap will ever be feasible.

Why? At one time it wasn't feasible to drill in the harsh North Sea, Siberia
or even in the Gulf of Mexico. All it takes is a few innovative mavericks
who think it can be done

It may be that we are
already at the limits of what can be gotten at a reasonable cost. For now,
the world runs on oil, but that is going to have to change someday, maybe
sooner than we think.

No doubt just as we evolved from horse to steam to oil power we'll move on
to something else. I personally is/was hoping for nuclear

Just not as soon as other appear to want, then again it never happens that
way on any issue

Well, Hells Bells! If it is not known for sure what is the origin of oil,
then all bets are off. I learned in college geology that oil was the result
of rotting vegetation and other organic matter from previous geological eras
that had become compressed over eons of time. Not much of that going on
today, is there? But if oil comes from deep within the mantel of the earth
and is inorganic ... ?

I don't know if we have time for more than one. I am no spring chicken.
And we can't afford for me to stay home, but we can afford to have mike

to
stay home. so that answers that dillemma.

My parents did not get married until your age (36) because the Great
Depression prevented it (nobody had any money). My mother had three

children
and so can you if that is what you want. You have lots of time and you

will
be a good parent because you have acquired maturity as had my mother. That
makes all the difference. Your children will be lucky to have mature
parents.

I agree about maturity being a good thing for parenting - i would have made
a horrible parent at 20. Although some of my late parent friends are the
most overindulgent parents ever - rearing some spoiled brats from hell. I
will not raise a brat

All you ever really had was a prolonged adolescence. Time to grow up

now
and
be an adult.

I love my prolonged adolescence - i have been very lucky to have such a
great, responsibility free time until now.

Think of it as a separate life. Now you are entering another 2nd life, and
if you are lucky and live a long time you will eventually enter a 3rd

life.
You would not want to continue any longer with your carefree life. Having
cares will connect you with all of humanity.

Being carefree has its high points, Eddie!

Oil IS rotting vegetation and animal matter however since thats been around
for eons I'm pretty sure we can find more of it

Like I said, wait another 20 years and see what happens, history so far has
been on my side of this
