Michael_jd Wrote: How do you tell the difference between a cup and cone bottom bracket and a cartridge one? Thanks. When you dissasemble the crank, look at the bearings, if you can see ball bearings... If you can't see bearings, but a sealed cartridge looking thing instead... If you can't take apart the crank, find someone else to work on your bike. -- Mr_Kingkillaha |

If there's a ring with about 8 radial notches (not 20 little ones) then you have a cup and cone bottom bracket. If you see 20 little ones, you have a cartridge BB. This doesn't apply to Truvativ bottom brackets, as they look like a cup-and-cone BB. All non-square-taper bottom brackets, one-piece cranks, and ones that use cotter pins, are cup-and-cone. -- Phil, Squid-in-Training |

Cup and Cone versus Cartridge
How do you tell the difference between a cup and cone bottom bracket and a
cartridge one? Thanks. |

I thought I should chime in with the traditional smart ass a.m-b response. Here goes: If you do a foot deep stream crossing every ride 100 times a year and don't do any maintenance, the cup and cone BB is the one that sounds like you have pea gravel and cat litter for bearings. I tried to figure out a way to describe it this morning but couldn't do it properly. It was before my coffee. Also: how old is your bike and what parts are on it? If it's pretty new, chances are it's cartridge. /s |

It has a Uniglide chain and a Acera X rear derailluer. Not sure about the rest. Based on the year and assuming that the bb is Shimano, chances are it's sealed. I don't work in a shop or anything, but I personally haven't seen a Shimano cup/cone bb since before, what, 1990? /s |
