Default Need mute blocks for Nuovo Record breaks

Can anyone suggest some brand of blocks for 70s era Campy breaks? Some
that don't screech like a banshee? I've tried both black Koolstops and
some NOS Campys and they're both terribly noisy.

thx,

You need to rub them in. With sandpaper wrapped around the rim
facing the block to be profiled, pull the other arm of the caliper
while oscillating the wheel. If the noise persists, the problem lies
in your wheels, the blocks are just doing their job.

Did you deglaze the KS from their molding compound? Run them on some
sandpaper till the breaking surface is de-glossed, and set them with a
penny's worth of toe-in.

No toe-in assuming he's using slide in pads in the OEM pad holders --
unless you want to do the bend-with-wrench olde tyme thing. These
brakes are not known for screeching with OEM pads or the old KoolStop
inserts (salmon not black). I would try some salmon Koolstops -- pad/
holder combo with those adjustable washers. Or go with the old salmon
block. http://sheldonbrown.com/harris/brake...tml#campagnolo Plug

Although I've never done it, I've long thought the better way of
producing toe-in would be to grind it into the brake block's surface on
a grinding wheel. Would that not work better than bending?

(In the '70s I bent some calipers for toe-in, but I've used cantilevers
on all my bikes for decades, so toe-in has been just a matter of
re-adjusting the pad positions.)

I've used a block plane. Same idea. It's been years since I manhandled
a caliper like that. But we did all used to do it all the time. It's a
wonder we didn't fatigue those arms to death.

NOS will be generally hard because they are pretty darned
old now. Needed for a restoration, but second choice for
actually riding.

Kool Stops have deserved loyal following. Clean your rims.
Ensure the centerbolt assembly is properly lubricated and
adjusted. Then slack the brake mounting nut, lubricate the
thread and torque it. Remove the brake shoe holder nuts,
clean and oil threads and torque. One or more of the above
items is vibrating in an audible range.

Thank you everybody for the ideas. I'll try possibly all of them
except torquing the arms; too chicken for that.

Bend the caliper to fit new pads, and then it will fit new pads the
next time they are installed.

Many caliper brakes simply deserve it.
