Actually looking at that video I can't help wondering why the lasers or
radar didn't pick her up. There's no sound so its hard to tell if the car
started to brake but it doesn't look like it. Still, the woman was
obviously
a cretin so Darwin would have got her in the end.

Yep, my first thought was that the system is crap, it would mean that
darkness, mist, fog, snow etc. would have a deluge of crashes.

In that dark environment, she MUST have been able to see the lights of
the approaching car but still walked out directly in front of it.

OK, she wasn't riding on it at that exact moment, but does having a
bicycle in one's possession switch off all common sense and powers of
observation?

fatally stupid, but the self driving car (or a competent driver ) should
still avoid or lessen the crash if possible.

The UK is doing smart cars the smart way: With government coordination and oversight.

Some times libertaria just doesn't work.

SHE looks the type, sorry.

Anyway, it seems the CAR was at fault after all.

QUOTE:
Speaking to CNET, Cortica's CEO Igal Raichelgauz said the firm's self-driving AI system detected Ms Herzberg 0.9 seconds before impact.

At this point the car was around 50 feet (15 metres) away.

He said the autonomous car's cameras and radar system should have had enough time to pick up the pedestrian and react to the situation.

That's a bit harsh. And "he" was a she anyway.

Police in Tempe, Ariz., say they're still investigating the incident and
have not yet assigned fault. But Tempe's police chief suggested that
Uber could be cleared of wrongdoing. "It's very clear it would have been
difficult to avoid this collision in any kind of mode (autonomous or
human-driven) based on how she came from the shadows right into the
roadway," the chief told the San Francisco Chronicle.

U. S. looneytarian mentality -- "gotta be totally private sector" -- is making driverless _way_ more difficult than necessary.

A century or so ago some reasonable normal person said, "hey, lets have traffic light controlled intersections to save lives. Red is easy to see so use that for 'stop' to be safe. Then use green for go." There was apparently some consensus and that's what became the standard and it more or less works.

As a fundamental philosophical matter, there is _nothing whatsoever_ different now than then.

Why use on-board petaflop computers when an old 8080a is all that is necessary?

If the State of California doesn't start promulgating some protocols, conventions, wave lengths, etc., then U. K. driverless will end up being by default the world standard.

I agree, besides the smoke/dark concerns, there is always the chance of
one of the sensors packing up or acting strangely.
It has also been proved that the cars can be taken over wirelessly by a
dodgey tech wizzo at the side of a road to make it crash.
Even a small laser can affect the sensors.

talking about it'
