Around here we have a lot of Asians moving in and they tend to run errands on their bikes. They don't seem oblivious to the careless driving but they certainly aren't going to let it overwhelm them. |

That's wrong, IMO. But the Streetsblog event was different. A guy on a bikeshare bike crashed red light after red light, ignoring the cop following in a cruiser order him to stop the bike. The biker kept looking back at the cop, but riding on, through light after light. The cop finally cut into the bike lane ahead of the rider and stopped. The biker ran into the cop car. Streetsglob called that "Deadly force." Apparently, they wanted instead for the cop to share donuts with the jerk on the bike. Apparently, no bicyclist should ever be asked to obey a traffic law. In general they are a rather rule-less class and going the wrong way on one way streets is common enough. They have added bicycle and bus streets only. This doesn't seem to stop the cars using them or the bikes not using them. It isn't clear about how common bicycle commuters are in New York because of the horrible weather, but in San Francisco it is getting a whole lot more common since you can park a dozen bikes in one car parking spot. |

But having come of age in a different era, being laid out with a mahogany shampoo is an important life lesson. I understood it after the second time. Armed police who go in fear of their lives are likely to react with lethal force. Except when I lived part of every year in the States, and in a couple of political exiles when I lived in South America, where the violence is merely less well-organised than in the States, I've always lived in places where the bobby on the beat goes unarmed and fearless, and is (or at least was) as likely to clip a teenage hooligan in the ear and send him on his way to sin no more rather than criminalise him for life by sending him to the criminal grad school of jail. And corruption was the bobby on the beat helping himself to an apple in passing the greengrocer and not paying for it. I rather miss those fearless societies. Would you call pedestrian advocates nuts if they criticized running Police SUVs into jaywalkers? |

Cops *are* permitted to use deadly force under some conditions, whether this was one of them ought to be the question. And what do you think the rider should have done? The photo shows that the cop did not run into the cyclist. The cyclist ran into the cop car. We have no way of knowing how far in front of the cyclist the cop pulled to the right. Perhaps it was too little distance, but that's not proven. I'm _not_ in favor of cyclists totally defying important traffic laws, and defying the lawful orders of police. Roughly half of cyclist fatalities come cyclist misbehavior.
