Default Spokes 102, straight and butted spokes

Thanks to all who contributed. For newbies, the upshot is that 1.1 and
1.3 are true. -- AJ

There's some confusing stuff in current DT thread; quite possibly it
confuses more than just me, but no one else is admitting to not
knowing...

Which of these statements are true:

1.1. A /butted/swaged/otherwise thinned down in the centre/ spoke has
better fatigue resistance.

1.2. Because it twists less during assembly.

1.3. Fatigue is normally demonstrated by the spoke breaking in the
elbow.

2. Butted etc spokes are only superior for wheels in which spokes
cross.

3. Radially spoked wheels should use straight gauge spokes.

Please number any additional information required so that we can
consider each point in isolation and actually make sense of it before
we move one. "We" being me and all the lurkers who have always
wondered but been embarrassed to ask.

I'll get to the bottom of it; just give me time
