Blair P. seems to know what I'm talking about, thanks, Blair, that was
really interesting info.

I figured someone must have already tried such things, just didn't
know.

So, if someone using my idea went 150mph, but the problem is he'll
get blown over, but what about using the increased power efficiency to
haul things, or power a 4 wheeled small car more easily?

Blair has pointed out that the record is 150mph with a bike with a
very large chain wheel(sprocket) and a very small cog(racing cog).
The size of the chain wheel(sprocket) is limited by the leverage of
the pedal, however. Your tangential velocity you can achieve on a
large chain wheel is limited by your leverage of the crank, or pedal
lever.
MOre power allows faster tangential velocity or a very large chain
wheel(sprocket).

Do you understand what I'm getting at, Blair?

Did you mean, by flat-pedal bike, he was riding a bike like I
described, where you aren't spinning pedals around, but rather
ratcheting the chain wheel, like a stair master. This would allow you
to turn a much larger Chain wheel.

Do you happen to know what the diameter of the chain wheel was on
the bike that went 150mph?

I mean, you could make the chain wheel nearly as big as the front
wheel, if you put the torque axle on the front wheel axle, and use
gears to channel the chain up on the bottom and down on the top, under
your legs.

I mean, the idea of my bike is just expanding the basic idea of the
bicycle, it's merely an extrapolation of the basic principle.

Planetary gears can be used to reverse direction of rotation in
front, incidently.

Nobody will go 150 mph in any fairing they are pushing themselves.

The only reason that guy went that fast is that something else
took away ALL of the wind resistance.

In effect, he had a 150 mph tailwind.

In a fairing, there is still drag. Any amount of drag will
stop you well before your energy output can put you over 100
mph. The best ever is something over 60 mph.

As for hauling things, having lower drag on the rider
doesn't help there, because you're adding at least the
rolling resistance of the trailer, plus probably its much
higher drag as well.

And your last clause should clue you.

If you put pedals in a contemporary passenger car (which is
essentially a self-powered fairing for a recumbent rider),
just how fast do you think you'll ever go? How fast in the
real world which has hills and sand and traffic and stuff?

Your ideas tend to go in a certain direction that others
have tried, but you go about 4X farther in that direction
than human power will ever be capable of reaching.

No it isn't. A big-wheeler bike is all about small crank, big wheel,

ratcheting the chain wheel, like a stair master. This would allow you
to turn a much larger Chain wheel.

I never saw the "flat-pedal bike" reference. Any mechanism
for turning linear motion into rotational motion will sap
efficiency.

crankshaft was the hub of the front wheel. It's the same
setup as any kid's tricycle, actually.

front, incidently.

In case you need to backpedal.

Why? If you are going to introduce gears anyway, you may as well
increase the gear-inches that way and not worry about the size of any
particular cog/chainwheel. That's how Abbott's bike was set up.

By the way, Rompelberg has set the record at 166.9 mph way back in
1995. John Howard's record no longer stands.

Well, you're obviously convinced that you're right and he's wrong, and I'm
not going to argue the point. I would suggest however that if you have a
new idea in cycling that would allow a reasonably fit rider to reach speeds
of 50-60mph, you must immediately run down to your local metal fabricator
with your design for the lengthened crank, patent it, and make a *fortune*.

Your idea could be worth *millions*. A revolution in human powered
transportation named after you. Generations to come singing your praises.
This could be bigger than pnuematic tires.

All that for a couple hundred spent at a metal fabricator's shop.
