Default Compatibility of Ultegra 6500 9-speed Cassette with Dura Ace 7701 chain

For an upcoming mountainous century I bought an Ultegra 6500 9-speed
cassette with a 27-tooth bailout low gear. I also picked up a new
Dura Ace chain. The problem is that the 2 lowest and 2 highest cogs
seem to grind in either chainring, even though they are dead center
with the derailleur jockey wheel. Fiddling with the barrel adjuster
on the derailleur or on the downtube doesn't help.

The chain works fine with my 1-year old Dura Ace 12x25 9-speed cog
set. I didn't get the Dura Ace 12x27 because I'll probably only use
it this once. But I have to ask: is the chain compatible with
Ultegra cassette? Or is this just what folks put up with using
Ultegra? My previous bikes were Ultegra and I never had any problems
like this.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts/ideas.

DURA ACE 7701 chain is fine with Ultegra 6500 cassettes.
If the jockey wheels are lined up you don't want to adjust tension.
If you just installed a new chain make absolutely sure that it i
properly routed, is the correct length, and that you didn't swap th
upper jockey wheel for the lower jockey wheel when making th
change...... I don't mean to accuse you of something you wouldn't eve
think of doing, but I have seen it done on more than one occasion whe
the person put the Shimano chain pin in and discovered he hadn't ru
the chain through the rear derailer. He then removed the jockey wheel
and threaded the chain through, but when he re-installed the jocke
wheels he put them in the wrong positions.
I have used both model cassettes on both systems with many 9 speed H
chains, all with excellent results.
These are just ideas that I think of now, but they may not b
applicable to your current needs

Routed, yep. Length, yep. Good thought about jockey wheel swap, but
I left them on.

It seems strange. But I still get the same grindy feeling that you
get when you put a new chain on worn cogs and/or chainring, or old
chain on new cogs. Then when I put my 1-year-old Dura Ace 12x25 on
the same wheel, derailleur adjusted the same--no problems at
all...except for the problem I anticipate on sustained 18% pitches 70
miles into this century tomorrow.

Oh well, my next stop might be Ebay to say farewell to this brand new
cassette.

Thanks for the thoughts, Daveornee.

Any chance you need to adjust the B-tension screw, to get some
clearance between the jockey and the larger cogs?
