A number of criticisms of this bike: 1. It is made from stainless steel, this is not the strongest nor most fracture resistant tubing. 2. The weight of the bike is still a lb over that of a Giant over the counter bike with Ultegra gear and Ultegra wheels on it. And the Giant is $2,500. There is NOTHING historic about a bike with a carbon fiber fork since these are the most likely points of failure. 4. The price is preposterous. I ride a Merckx and love it. But I have less than a grand in it. I should pay 18 times as much to save five and a half lbs and lose some reliability?

Eddy Merckx is a legend that will never die. Remember when they tried to intimate that Tom Boonen would be another Merckx? Most people have never heard the name Boonen today.

And of what use are legends? Does ANYONE know the name of the 16 year old kid that won the first Tour?

He wants $18.5K for it; what did they originally sell for?

Is that ridiculous or what? Heck for that kind of $$ you can get a VW Van with 200K miles on it.

Maurice Garin won the first Tour de France in 1903. At the age of
32, not 16. He was of Italian parentage.

And no, I didn't have to Google for this information. It's in my
copy of "Le Tour" by Geoffrey Wheatcroft. This book is on my coffee
table in a pile of "books to read again" ... books, does anyone
remember them?

Obscure fact of no use to anyone: One of my laptops is named after
Maurice Garin. Although the one I'm currently using is named
after Octave Lapize who won the Tour in 1910.

There was a race that was some incredible distance for the time that went from Paris to perhaps Belgium. It was the race that incited the Tour. A 16 year old won it.

I own a Maurice Garin bike. It's totally awesome -- 18 kg of French steel. Actually, the new models are made in China, but they are still awesome.
