Default More driver wriggling

Looks like he will be walking to the petrol station for a while, that is if
he can get insurance when his ban runs out. Note he tried the old "I was a
passenger, the driver has run away" wriggle.
"A STUDENT who volunteered for a community transport scheme has lost his
licence after driving while over the drink-drive limit to get cigarettes in
the middle of the night. Joe McCarthy drove his mum's car into the wall of a
Redland tennis club because he was more than twice the legal limit, Bristol
Magistrates' Court heard.

The 21-year-old had drunk eight or nine pints with friends in town and came
home by taxi. But they decided to take a trip to the local petrol station to
get more cigarettes at around 4am. Even though the Texaco station was less
than half a mile away, McCarthy decided to drive instead of walk.

He had the accident in Birchall Road on the way back and had to be taken to
hospital after suffering a cut to his head in the crash. McCarthy, of
Malmesbury Close, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol when he
appeared in court yesterday. Magistrates disqualified him from driving for
17 months and ordered he pay £185 in fines and costs.

Laura Opie, prosecuting, said: "At 4.19am, police were called to a road
traffic accident at the Kings Drive junction in Redland. "They saw a blue
Vauxhall Corsa had collided with the wall of a tennis club and a telegraph
pole. "Mr McCarthy was covered in blood and had claimed he was a passenger
and the driver had run from the scene. "He was taken to the BRI for a head
injury."

No one else was injured in the incident but a witness confirmed that
McCarthy had in fact been driving the car at the time. The court heard that
the defendant was a university student, in his third year at Liverpool,
reading economics and politics.

Judy Hampton, defending, said: "He had been out with friends and returned by
taxi. "Back at his home they decided they wanted to get some food, and they
were aware there was a garage a short distance away. "Rather than walk,
foolishly he was tempted to drive the car. "It was a short distance - a 1km
round trip. He deeply regrets it.

"The only injury was to himself, and the only damage was to the car. He has
been driving since he was 17 and has a full, clean licence. "Over the summer
months he has been working as a temporary school care taker. "He made a very
stupid decision on this occasion."
