On Monday morning my neighbor brought over a bicycle that his wife had
bought online and asked me to assemble. I groaned, thinking it must be
some piece of crap from a department store, but it turned out to be a
very nice Linus Dutchi 3i.

Don't know why she didn't buy it from a dealer since there is one dealer
about 25 miles from us, and assembly would have been included for the
same price.

Personally, I would have bought the Jamis Commuter 2
https://www.jamisbikes.com/usa/commuter2femme.html for about the same
money, actually less since the dealer around here, Sports Basement,
offers 10% discounts all the time and 20% off sales occasionally, and
doesn't exclude bicycles like REI does.

That is a 'oma fiets' still very popular among the teenagers around here.

Not a lot of step-through bicycles around here with chain guards,
fenders, moustache handlebars, and internal gears.

None of the top bicycle brands sell those models in the U.S., though
they do offer them in other countries, i.e. Trek's L300 step through
https://www.trekbikes.com/nl/nl_NL/fietsen/hybride-fietsen/recreatie/l-series/l300-midstep/p/24574/?colorCode=black.

Are those drum brakes?!

Drum brakes would be nice but unfortunately they have become rare.
Looks like disc brakes, and a hub dynamo.

No, the specs say "roller brake."
https://bike.shimano.com/en-EU/technologies/component/details/shimano-inter-m.html

It does indeed but then they must have the wrong picture in the ad:

https://trek.scene7.com/is/image/TrekBicycleProducts/L300Lowstep_19_24576_A_Primary?$responsive-pjpg$&wid=1440&hei=1080

Maybe they meant just for the rear because the front sure is a disc in
the picture. This is the rear brake:

https://trek.scene7.com/is/image/TrekBicycleProducts/FeatureAsset_326658_roller_brakes_blx?$responsive-pjpg$&cache=on,on&wid=480&hei=480&fit=crop,1

The specs are a bit vague, says "Rem - Shimano Rollerbrake". Rem means
brake, as in one of them, not both brakes (that would be remmen).

Some older bikes had massive drum brakes up front where most of the
brake energy is to be consumed. They were really good. With discs there
is always a higher chance of overheating which is why I upgraded to 8"
rotors front and back. It won't be an issue in the Netherlands though
because they have hardly any hills.

ISTM the Roller Brake is a drum brake. It has brake shoes that expand
outward to contact the inside surface of the brake drum. The actuation
mechanism is unusual, but it's still a drum brake.

Any brake that requires grease on the braking surface is heap powerful
magic and one misstep and it's a big purple flash and nothing left apart
from your cleats. Personally I believe there is a small daemon in them
that looks after the braking and the grease is just daemon food.
