I sent one to his ISP with the full headers and IP, we'll see...

In the meantime, do try a Usenet client that allows you to have a killfile
to sort out the idiots.

I like the Pan Newsreader, but there are many others.

i have OE which has "block sender". is that the same or does killfile go by
the sender's ip?

Another bright one, F.Golightly. Are you Roger or whomever? You add nothing
of value and try to hide your identity.

I for one am tired of the spammers on these groups who have nothing
intelligent to add and simply harass others. I do not know Marty Wallace and
do not know why anyone would deserve this harassment. If I am totally off
base--I still do not want to see this crap and I doubt that I am a minority
in this matter.

Yes. I encourage others to say something instead of being subject to this
nonsense.

I am Marty Wallace.
I told Roger Bratton to stop harassing Alan Erskine on the aus.bicycle
newsgroup and now he harasses me. In my previous postings I've put his
home phone number and address. I can only suggest you contact his
service provider and register a complaint. I'm in Australia, otherwise
I'd visit Mr Bratton and deal with him personally. Do a search on
ZBOXMAN and you'll find he's been harassing people for quite some time.

LOL, I wish I could block by IP, that would be handy. Block sender is
pretty much like "adding to a killfile". It's the simple and quick way.

Some of the fancier newsreaders let you get specific by specifying which
subject to block--you can often use a wildcard to filter out stuff like
"*viagra*" where the "*" can be whatever. You can also killfile by
filtering by the references in the header.

My newsreader (Pan) and many others let you set a "time out" on a low
score (plonking or killing effectively just lowers the score to -9999 and
you choose just to not view low scores, that's how it works) so that if
you're having a spat with "Fred" you can ignore him for 30 days if you
want.

Most of these newsreaders keep the scorefile in a plain text file that can
be edited with a text editor.

A bit complex to be sure, but a little time invested can be well spent
depending on what groups you frequent. Usenet spam varies greatly from
group to group. I'd love to know why.

to actually answer your question, I believe most newsreaders just go by
authorname, but I'm not an authority.

Hi Marty!

If enough people file a complaint they (ISP) will take action. I recognize
that I take the risk of spamming from this guy. However, he lives very close
to me and I will follow up with the appropriate action.

We should not let people like this slander others and collectively we could
make the difference. Roger's diatribes are meant to be malicious and subject
to review by civil and criminal courts.
