Default Baydon Cooke's fall in the Giro d' Italia

Amazing how he got up and walked away from a 30+mph crash. His lack of
serious injury was mostly a result of the advertising boarding
absorbing the impact of his collision. I'm sure it would have been
much worse if he had hit just the plain old metal raillings. I hope it
was noted by tour organisers to use these sheets of (hardboard?) again
at stage finishes......
Sean.

What is the logic of the Giro organisers awarding Cooke last place on the
stage, when he was apparently caused to fall by Paolo Bettini riding him
into the barriers?

Bettini was then given fourth place on the stage! Quite mystifying!

Not at all.

Isn't Cooke Australian?
isn't Bettini Italian?

And if Im not mistaken isn't the Giro is an Italian race ;-)

It's all in the rules:

spills in the last km are covered by 2.6,027 and 1.2.026. If Cooke was
placed last he hasn't crossed teh finishline , but should have gotten
the same time as Bettini

penalty for first offence: relegation to end of his field, +30" and chf
200 fine

Cooke walked across the line without carrying his bike.
All the best

Baden Cooke gets the place at which he crossed the line. He should get the
same time as the group in which he crashed (which he did).

Bettini is relegated to the back of the group in which the infringement
occured, ie the group of four. In fairness he should be behind Baden Cooke
but obviously isn't.

Nope, quite a few people crossed the line behind Cooke (eg half the
Phonak team were 7 minutes down after the other crashes). He was
relegated to last place because he crossed the line without his
bike, which is an infringement.

Hmm, I don't think it's that clear-cut... Certainly Bettini is in
a strop about it today; signed on last and started on his own and
is currently out in a breakaway to make a point. Then again perhaps
he doth protest too much...

Pete.
