Default home made power-grips

Hello All,

I'm looking to make some power-grip straps for my pedals. Can anyone give me
insight to the composition of the strap material?

I'm thinking that an old car seatbelt (doubled over) may be comparable. Any
other ideas?

Keiron

The genuine article seem to be similar, although perhaps a little
stiffer than the average car seatbelt.

Any decent sporting goods store should sell nylon webbing in various
widths (and colors) by the foot. Try army surplus stores and hardware
stores as well.

They should also have the hardware to attach them to other items. You
want to keep an eye out for something that is triangular shape,
with a slot near one side for the webbing to loop through, and a hole
in the opposite point for a bolt.

Use a flame (well ventilated) to prevent the end from unravelling.
Loop it through the hardware, then sew is in an x-inside-a-square
shape with a strong needle and good thread.

Should be strong.

Haven't made powergrips like this yet, but I've made a harness before
with the same technique, and it was very durable.

You'll probably want to sandwich something between the two layers to
give it a bit of spring/stiffness - maybe a strip of polythene from a
heavy duty container (motor oil, bleach?).

Thanks all for the tips.

I'll doubtless 'stiffarize' it in some manner, or probably just buy new
nylon if it's as readily available as suggested, but i'm increasingly
worried about any holes I have to make in the nylon: should I put those
rivit rings in so the bolts don't shred the nylon or is this unlikely to
happen or will it prevent the bolts locking tight?
Also anyone know of a suitable piece of pre-existing hardware to act as the
front bracket??

thanks

there is a pedal that has no toe clip, looks like this:

Don't know where you can just get the strap material, but I think this is
what your trying to put together, no?

here is another whole package, for 20 bucks you can get pedals with the toe
clip and straps.

is doing it yourself safe?
You want to be able to get your foot out of the pedal occasionally, for
instance when your going uphill and the rear tire spins out and your stuck
there at 0 mph, what will you do if you can't get your foot out- fall
over? - over a cliff- hope not

That's not how it's supposed to work?

Dear Mike,

No, you're supposed to balance like this:

Though you may eventually come out of your shoe:

What are those under the chain ring, looks like a chain idler pully or
tensioner of some sort. Is that(those) a 5 speed, I don't see a lower chain
ring. Nice pic.
