'Here for example is the insurance company LV, who have managed to get
their important road safety data analysis onto GMTV.

"Mounting financial pressures have led to a surge in inexperienced cyclists
taking to the roads," say LV in their press release ...
.... using data that forgets to account for the usual seasonal variation, and
seems to get the prevalence of both cycling and accidents wrong, by an order
of magnitude. Most importantly, this gets on the telly, with a nice puff for
the LV brand, despite the fact that almost everything I have told you was
spelled out to GMTV, by the boys and girls in tweed at the CTC, before it
ever went to air.'

So, other than a basket and a bell, what would people recommend as
things that make a bike look good (removeable things, if it's a
borrowed bike)?

Streamers and a windmill on the handlebars, a whippy aerial on the back
with a tiger tail.

Congratulations. In two out of two posts in this thread, you've
managed to post some complete **** which was in no way relevant to the
topic, and wasn't remotely funny either.

If this is the quality of statistician this insurance company has
perhaps the public SHOULD be informed.
If their shares are worth anything at all it's time to sell.

Well what do you expect, all the best commercial mathematicians work as
econometricians for banks and hedge funds calculating their bonus
payments...............

Or Danish, perhaps:

But not, I think, in the specific context of "I've got a bike, you
can ride it if you like".

If they're at all like my employer (who shall remain nameless to protect
ME), the article was written by the marketing department and the numbers
were calculated by a marketing intern. No mathematical ability required
(or desired).
