Default Mason Deakin, 11, dies two weeks after Anlaby Road crash

Terrible news.
QUOTE:
The second young boy involved in an horrific car accident on Anlaby Road has died.

Mason Deakin had been fighting for his life in hospital since he and his best friend Steven Duffield were struck by a vehicle as they rode their bikes along the busy stretch on Monday, October 19.

The 11-year-old battled for a fortnight in intensive care, however his death has now been confirmed after he passed away with his family by his side.

His uncle shared the devastating news on Monday evening that his "fun loving" nephew had lost his fight.

Mason's best friend died at Hull Royal Infirmary on the night of the accident and both families are both being cared for by specially trained family liaison officers.

He was transferred to Leeds General Infirmary, where he had remained in a coma and on life support until Monday.

The collision happened at around 6.10pm on October 19 close to the East Yorkshire Buses garage in Anlaby Road and prompted a police investigation to be launched.

Officers were seen combing an area of grass near the foot of Anlaby Road flyover the following day.

A 30-year-old man had been arrested at the scene of the accident and has since been released under investigation.

Mason's dad, Jordan Deakin, told Hull Live following the crash that the family was “in bits” as they kept their hopes up that Mason would pull through.

“He is stable but he is not out of the woods yet,” Jordan said.

“He is in intensive care on life support and we have been told by doctors that we have got to take it hour by hour at the moment.”

However, their worst fears have been realised.

Sharing an update online, his uncle has launched a crowdfunding campaign to help pay for his funeral while also confirming his passing

"Mason Lee fought for his life for two weeks in intensive care and on life support but as a result of a serious head injury he could not fight on no more," he said.

"I am asking for help and support to help my family raise the funds for funeral costs. I would be very grateful at this sad time for all your help and support as would his mam Kirsty and his dad Jordan.

"Mason was a fun loving little lad and it's touched so many hearts of Hull."

A second family member paid tribute on social media.

"Lost for words," she said, "RIP to not only my best friend by my cousin. I love you so much my boy."

Humberside Police confirmed the news on Tuesday lunchtime.

In a statement, a spokeswoman for the force said: "We are very sorry to report that 11 year-old Mason Deakin has sadly passed away in hospital following a collision on Anlaby Road in Hull on Monday 19 October, in which 10 year-old Steven Duffield also lost his life.

"Mason lost his fight for life in hospital yesterday (Monday 2 November) with his family by his side.

"We send our heartfelt condolences to Mason’s family and friends as they come to terms with their tragic loss.

"Our specially trained officers continue to support Mason’s family and also Steven Duffield’s family during this difficult time.

"The collision investigation continues and we would appeal for anyone who can help with our enquiries to call our non-emergency number 101 quoting log 488 of 19 October."
